Summer Mooting

Now that exams are over and the pressure is finally off, we have a suggestion to help fill that law-shaped void in your life…

The NULS will be holding Summer Mooting Sessions for those of us keen on honing our skills, and more importantly, honing our CVs – in such a competitive time every edge you have over the other guy is definitely worth having!

These are friendly sessions and will almost always be followed by drinks. This is a great chance to get to meet law students from other universities as, although these sessions are hosted by Napier Law Society, it is open to all universitites and some have already shown a very keen interest.

Our first session is provisionally booked for the 30th June at Vittorias (downstairs) on North Bridge between 2-4 and will be judged by our very own Ken Dale-Risk.

There will be two moots for each session and we are starting off the summer with a nice easy one. If you are interested in mooting or just coming along to watch at first them please email info@edinburgh-napier-lawsociety.org

Hope to see you all there!

Important – Diploma Changes

Following a Consultation Paper the Law Society of Scotland (LSoS) have decided to enact major changes to the route to qualification for a solicitor. These changes are important and will affect those graduating in 2011 and beyond.

There are seven major changes taking place including quite drastic changes to the diploma. For example, the diploma will be offered by over 30 institutions and will also be offered on a part-time basis. Traineeships will also be reformed, for example, firms will now be able to offer partial traineeships and therefore firms may ’share’ a traineeship.

The funding for diplomas will also change and there is a specific guidance note for this on the LSoS website. An online portal for trainees geared to more aptly guide them through the process will also be launched.

CPD (continued professional development) is also changing and will require 20 hours/year which will be self certified however the LSoS will check records approx. every four years.

Full details of all the changes are available on the Education and Training section of the LSoS website www.lawscot.org.uk/training/consult/

The LSoS are keen to get feedback from students and answer any questions so please get in touch. They will also soon be revamping their website so if there is something you would like to see please make a suggestion by emailing newlawyers@lawscot.org.uk
