End of Year Ball

It’s time for you all to sign up for the final, and what will inevitably be, the best event of the academic year – the NULS Law Ball which will take place this year just after the May exams on the 4th June 2009. Curb your excitement, folks! There are plenty of spaces left but only a few weeks to get your tickets…

The venue booked is The Caves and, as befits such a cool venue, the dress code will be formal. This gives all you fit lads with footballers’ legs the chance to don your kilts and for all of you with varicose veins, you get the chance to open a new pair of support stockings to put on under your suit. Girls should wear evening dress and everyone, (yes, everyone), should wear a mask (even your significant others/plus ones/escorts). We’re thinking this could be blessed relief for some folk, (…and there’s a fab prize for the best mask as well as a raffle).
The evening kicks off at 7pm with a drinks reception followed by a three-course dinner, accompanied by wine, (obviously), at eight. A cash bar will also be available. The menu can be found here (please note a vegetarian option will be available). Any specific dietary requirements should be communicated at time of purchase of ticket(s).

Dinner will be followed by a ceilidh/disco and dancing can be had until 2am when the venue closes.
The final ticket prices for members (subsidised) is £50 and for non-members is £55. Tickets can be purchased by visiting us at our various promotional tables or from Committee members – email us at info@edinburgh-napier-lawsociety.org if you have any difficulty locating or contacting Committee members.
So start looking forward to the end of another arduous, academic session or even to graduating and get your tickets!!

Executive Committee Elections

As I’m sure you’re all aware from being up-to-date with the ever-shifting constitution of the student law society, elections are due to take place before Easter for the five posts on the Executive Committee which require filling for the 2009/10 academic year.

The five posts are President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Events & Promotions and the election process can be found in Article 8 of the aforementioned constitution, which itself can be found on the society website: http://edinburgh-napier-lawsociety.org/constitution/

To be eligible for election you must be both a matriculated student and a paid-up member of the society. The deadline for nominations, for any post, is 24th April – intention to nominate should be communicated to the Secretary by this date by emailing secretary@edinburgh-napier-lawsociety.org

All nominations must be in writing. The elections themselves will take place at the AGM which will take place before the end of the academic session, with the time and place to be confirmed nearer the time.

The law society was newly-formed this year and we are the second biggest society in the university– a lot of the groundwork involved in any new venture has consequently been covered, so we’re looking for folk who are committed and have the time to both develop and maintain the society. It has been a whole lot of fun but the work-shy should think carefully before running for election since it has been a lot of hard work.

Calling all BA students

The Napier Law Society is a society for all law students and we on the committee have noticed that there are very few BA students compared to the number of LLB students. As the BA students’ input is equally valid we need some BA students to respresent their programme in the society.

This is also a fantastic chance for students from both courses to mix. We really want you to join the society, especially if you are a BA student, so download the membership form now and get involved!

Book Shop Service

Napier Law Society offer a free Book Shop Service for all law students.  You can click here to access the book store where you can offer or request a book. This service also allows you to offer or request other material including journals, laptops, USB sticks and any other material relevant to the study of law.

In order to post you will be required to enter an email address and to validate it, however, all email information is kept private.

Please note: Napier University Law Society only acts as a medium for the Book Shop service and does not take any responsibility for items bought or sold through this service.

Constitution Change

The NULS have added a new Article to the society’s constitution so as to reflect the views of our members.

A recent decision by the Executive Committee to hold an event in a specific venue was challenged by a society member on political grounds. The decision was reversed after research by the Executive Committee into the venue unearthed unrelated information which caused the Committee to reconsider its original decision. Despite this original decision being reversed on unrelated grounds to the original challenge, the objection led the Executive Committee to consider how it will deal with objections in future and, to this end, Article 13 has been added to the constitution which ensures there is a mechanism whereby members who object to any decisions of the Executive Committee may do so. All members should make themselves familiar with the constitution and please email any comments, criticisms and compliments to us at info@edinburgh-napier-lawsociety.org

Mentoring Program

The NULS runs a Mentoring Program, specific to law students, which has been a great success.

This is an exciting chance for both prospective mentors and mentees. Students from all law courses and years are eligible to be mentored and students in 2nd year and above from the LLB and BA are eligible to be mentors. click here to read the introductory pack for mentors.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor or mentee please email your name, course and year to info@edinburgh-napier-lawsociety.org
